There are several reasons it is essential your business have a tagline that resonates with potential customers. It is important to remember that a tagline promotes the brand personality of your company. What is it you want your customers to remember and know about your business? If your customers feel that your brand personality is compatible with them, you are likely to have repeat customers who also promote your company through word-of-mouth advertising. The basic brand message you want a customer to remember, what above all else do you want a customer to know and feel when they purchase a product from you?
There are people out there that think that a good tagline is just important and relevant for a large company, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the smaller your company is, the more beneficial it is that it has a tagline that allows you to be remembered. This way your customer base, however small it may be, will identify themselves with your company. It is a quick way to set your company apart from the competition.
Taglines are essential for a business because of their high recall value. Though it first aired in 1984, “where is the beef?” is still remembered and referenced to in pop culture toda. If you can ensure a tagline is used in daily conversation this is what you are aiming for. When this happens, it is constant company advertising that you do not even have to target. Another famous example is “Just Do It” from Nike; it promotes a relationship with the company, sets a standard, vision and goal that the customer wants to associate itself with. Taglines can inspire the consumer; it can be a call to action or a simple reminder that when you purchase this product, it can change your life in a positive way, you as a consumer are a part of a group, a family.
It is extremely difficult to promote all the information previously mentioned and condense it into a short tagline that not only is easy to remember, but also has a sense of originality to it. If it succeeds however, it clearly illustrates the company’s goals as well and adds visibility to potential and repeat customers. It is crucial that you understand the vision and goal of your business before you start writing your company tagline.
That is why it is important that you have a professional take care of your tagline, because simply having a tagline for the sake of having one, is not going to be beneficial. Worse yet, having a tagline that is completely non-sequitor with the companies profile can actually damage your reputation because it can literally confuse the consumer.
If your company has the tagline it desires and deserves it becomes imperative to repeat and emphasize this tagline to the consumer every chance you get. If you have a newsletter that you send out, it needs to be on there, if you send out an e-mail, it needs to be on there, if you have a website, it needs to be prominently displayed, business card, same thing. It should be as standard as the letterhead you use; it needs to be repeated constantly for maximum exposure and recall.
